Nissen fundoplication: The laparoscopic technique for your patient’s comfort
 
Most people find relief for their severe acid reflux by making a few simple lifestyle and dietary changes, such as avoiding trigger foods and elevating the upper body while sleeping. You may also prescribe medication. Ranging from over-the-counter antacids and histamine-2 receptor antagonists to proton- or acid-pump inhibitors, pharmacological therapy is effective in controlling symptoms for the vast majority of patients.
 
If these therapies fail and the patient presents severe, atypical or extraesophageal symptoms such as wheezing, hoarseness or chest pain, surgical treatment for GERD may be indicated.
 
Patient selection involves diagnostics including esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and barium swallow tests to evaluate the esophagus and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), as well as 24-hour pH monitoring.
 
When testing reveals a functional or mechanical problem of the LES, Nissen fundoplication has been shown to be extremely effective. The procedure is used to repair defects and increase pressure in the LES to prevent acid reflux.
